Summerville teacher needs help with science books for her ELA class

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - A Summerville English Language Arts teacher wants her students to grow as learners and give them exposure to more than just reading.Casey Dorsey teaches ELA to seventh-grade students at East Edisto Middle School.During Dorsey’s teaching career, she has taught students from kindergarten through third graders. After taking a short break from teaching, she eventually returned to the classroom to teach middle school. She is currently in her 14th year of teaching.She says the only change betwe...

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - A Summerville English Language Arts teacher wants her students to grow as learners and give them exposure to more than just reading.

Casey Dorsey teaches ELA to seventh-grade students at East Edisto Middle School.

During Dorsey’s teaching career, she has taught students from kindergarten through third graders. After taking a short break from teaching, she eventually returned to the classroom to teach middle school. She is currently in her 14th year of teaching.

She says the only change between elementary and middle school students is the way they show their love. She says in middle school, she’s able to focus on more challenging topics.

“It’s a place I never saw myself, but I am loving it,” Dorsey says.

Right now, Dorsey’s students are reading “The Hunger Games” and focusing on character analysis. Dorsey says the class is focusing on dystopian literature and how that dystopia applies to our world today. This year, Dorsey is looking forward to their non-fiction unit on the curriculum. She says they’ll start with poetry and gradually work their way to non-fiction.

One of Dorsey’s Donors Choose Projects is for science literature to help bring science into her ELA classroom. She’s looking for novels covering earth science, life science and physical science that will help her students understand science concepts from a literature standpoint.

“One of my goals this year is work with science and social studies in order to bring cross-curricular content into the ELA classroom.” Dorsey says, “I’m really hoping to get some science literature in there especially because a lot of middle schoolers struggle with science, it’s one their hardest subjects. I’m really looking forward to bridging that gap between science and ELA.”

Dorsey just received her certification in science in order to teach science classes to her middle schoolers in the future. In the meantime, she’s planning to do what she can to help bridge the gap between learning science and reading. Another project Dorsey has in the works is cow eyes for a dissection. Her students will soon be learning about sound and light waves. Her class will be dissecting the cow eyes to understand how our eyes receive light waves.

Dorsey wants her students to not only be successful students but successful people overall. She says STEAM education is very important and educating them as a whole child and not just in one certain subject area. Dorsey is hoping it will help them grow as students and learners, find what they’re interested in and give them exposure to more than just reading.

The first of a cartload of new supermarkets coming to the Charleston area soon will open.

North Carolina-based Harris Teeter plans to host its grand opening at 8 a.m. April 17 on Nexton Parkway at Brighton Park Boulevard near Summerville, according to spokeswoman Danna Robinson.

The first full day of business will follow a “Taste of Teeter” preview of the 64,000-square-foot grocery store from 4-7 p.m. April 16. Participants can sample products, and registers will be open for those looking to shop during the preliminary event.

The new store also includes a fuel station. Plans also call for outparcel buildings on the 14-acre site. Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of The Kroger Co. of Cincinnati, bought the property in 2016 for $4.76 million, according to Berkeley County land records.

Across the street, Florida-based Publix is under construction and is expected to open the 48,000-square-foot store by mid-year, according to Nexton spokeswoman Cassie Cataline. The supermarket will anchor One Nexton, a new retail development with a mix of tenants.

The competing Berkeley County grocery stores are coming to the 5,000-acre unincorporated Nexton community where 7,500 residences will exist at full buildout in about 15 years, bringing 18,750 people to the Charleston suburbs. That’s more than the current population of Moncks Corner.

As of early February, the master-planned community had 3,000 single-family houses and townhomes sold and under construction and 1,860 apartments completed, according to Cataline.

More homes are coming to the area in a separate development southwest of Nexton. About 700 housing units are planned on part of a 1,000-acre tract near Nexton Parkway and Drop Off Drive near Interstate 26. Summerville annexed the large swath of land west of Sheep Island Road in 2020. Most of Nexton is not in the town of Summerville.

A Mount Pleasant-based publisher of local and regional history books that last branched out to New England is adding the Midwest to its geographic portfolio.

Arcadia Publishing announced Feb. 8 that it has acquired Belt Publishing, which is headquartered in Ohio.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Arcadia described the new addition to its literary lineup as “an independent press known for its commitment to publishing diverse voices and stories from the Rust Belt,” including “serious nonfiction on any topic” and “smart narrative” accounts.

Arcadia CEO Brittain Phillips said the deal delivers “two terrific opportunities in one acquisition.”

“It strengthens our local and regional catalog in the Midwest, where Belt has been publishing remarkable books for a decade,” he said in a written statement. “And as we look to the future, Belt helps to expand the way we think about local-interest publishing, with new voices and fresh ways to define sense of place.”

Belt was started in 2013 by former English professor Anne Trubek. She said that “while it has been fun to own and run a small business,” it also could be “overwhelming and stressful.”

Belt has released such titles as “What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia” and “The Last Children of Mill Creek.” It will continue to operate under its current name with Trubek staying on as publisher “while benefiting from Arcadia’s unique sales and marketing model for local and regional content,” according to the prepared statement.

Trubek said the Wingo Way company “has long been the model for local-interest publishing and served as the inspiration for Belt.”

“We will be able to continue with our editorial program and expand into new areas, together. ... How tremendous,” she said.

Aracadia was founded in 1994 and has amassed a catalog of more than 20,000 titles that focus on “hyper-local” history and culture. Many of the books are loaded with vintage photographs and include distinct sepia images on the covers.

South Carolina exported more goods in 2023 than during the previous year, a new report shows, but the state — like the nation as a whole — still maintains a hefty trade deficit with other countries.

A total of $33.6 billion in manufactured products left South Carolina for foreign markets in 2023, up 19.3 percent from the previous year, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released Feb. 7.

Another $854.2 million in other goods, such as agricultural and forestry products, were shipped abroad from the Palmetto State.

Some of the exports could have been made in other states and shipped from the Port of Charleston, but the numbers indicate a healthy South Carolina manufacturing industry that cranks out tires, automobiles and commercial airplanes. The S.C. Commerce Department typically releases a breakdown of homegrown exports and related trade figures in late February.

A spokesman with the S.C. State Ports Authority could not immediately be reached for comment.

Imports of manufactured goods to South Carolina totaled nearly $51.3 billion last year, according to the report. The year-over-year drop of about 1 percent still represents a trade deficit totaling roughly $17 billion.

All told, South Carolina accounted for 2.6 percent of the nation’s exports of goods and 1.9 percent of all imports in 2023.

Nationally, Mexico last year surpassed China as the leading source of goods imported to the United States for the first time since 2002. The numbers reflect increased tensions between Washington, D.C., and China as well as the effects of tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump and retained by the Biden administration.

A Charleston area luxury boat manufacturer will expand its Dorchester County headquarters with a $10 million investment.

The investment by Scout Boats will expand and renovate the company’s corporate headquarters and will facilitate the production of the new 67 LX series yacht, one of the largest outboard-powered sportfishing yachts to be built in the world, according to a news release from the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

Scout Boats plans to enlarge its 36-acre campus by expanding and renovating its corporate headquarters located at 130 Spaniel Lane in Summerville, the release stated. Scout will also build a new 35,000-square-foot facility, which will allow the company to build component parts for its yacht division and support its new product line for the 67 LX series, a 67-foot model that debuted at this year’s Miami International Boat Show in February.

“We meet with the craftsmen and women in each of our four plants every month for award ceremonies, and I often remind them that we ship our boats all over the world to some very affluent customers who choose our brand because of the pride they put into each and every build,” Scout Boats CEO Steve Potts said in the release.

Scout Boats designs and manufactures world-class, luxury models ranging currently from 17 feet to 53 feet, according to the release. The company’s portfolio includes custom, state-of-the-art sportfishing center and dual consoles, and inshore and bay boat models.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Scout Boats and are proud to see its continued growth in Dorchester County,” said South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III in the release. This expansion underscores not only the strength of South Carolina’s growing boat manufacturing sector but speaks to the ability of our workforce to produce luxury products that are available worldwide.”

Renovations are expected to be complete by spring 2024, and operations are expected to be online by summer 2024.
