The Little League Baseball teams of Santa Clara began post-season play this past week in the annual District 44 Tournament of Champions. Teams in the minor, major, intermediate and junior divisions from each of the 14 leagues within the district participate in this single-elimination tournament in hopes of being crowned the 2015 T.O.C. Champions. The tournament began on Wednesday, June 10 and concluded on Monday, June 15 for the minors and Wednesday, June 17 for the major and intermediate division and Saturday, June 20 for the juniors.

S.C. Westside Minors The minor league Tournament of Champions kicked off Wednesday, June 10 as the S.C. Westside Red Sox took on the Tri-Cities Yankees at the Little League fields in Los Altos. It was the stellar pitching performances by the Sox staff, as well as an offensive outbreak for their hitters that contributed to the Westside 8-1 win.

The reigning 2014 Champions took the field on the cool, Wednesday evening in hopes of holding on to their title. The Santa Clara pitching staff, which consisted of Andrew Goldenberg, Luke McLachlan, Matthew Chung and Treavon Farleigh, certainly did its job in keeping their chances alive by allowing only five hits through six innings.

However, the Yankee pitchers had a harder time keeping S.C. off of the bases. Sam Sylvia sparked a rally in the top of the second with a lead-off single to second base. He would go on to score on a wild pitch while teammate Ethan Medeiros would score on a Brandon Fones groundball to the shortstop.

McLachlan had a big hit of his own in that inning. His single to center field brought in two of his teammates, Elias Gonzales and Warren Cohen, which put the inning run rule into effect for Santa Clara. It was 5-0 after the inning.

Starting pitcher Andrew Goldenberg through his 2.1 innings of work allowed only two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The Sox tacked on another three runs: two in the third when a Farleigh single brought home both Shea Arrilaga and Sylvia, and one in the fifth when Goldenberg crossed the plate after a single to center by Arrilaga.

The only run for the Yankees came in the bottom of the sixth when a pick-off attempt to second by catcher McLachlan ended with the ball in the outfield and a Yankee cleat touching both third and home.

The 8-1 victory on Wednesday allowed S.C. Westside to advance to the second round on Friday, where they beat Sunnyvale Southern by a score of 7-2. However, the season for the Red Sox ended after a 2-1 loss to fellow Santa Clara minor league team S.C. Briarwood.

S.C. Briarwood Majors The Briarwood Braves, in their first round of the T.O.C., were able to put together big offensive rallies to breeze past their competitor, the Moreland Padres, by a score of 13-2 in just four innings on June 11 at S.C. Homestead Little League field.

Jayden Greco started on the mound for the Padres hoping to shut down the Braves’ offense and keep his team in the running for Tournament Champions.

After a quiet offensive inning, Greco found himself in trouble early, having to pitch through a leadoff homerun and a triple in his first inning. He successfully did so by striking out two, stranding runners on first and second. The score was 2-0 at the end of the inning.

The deficit was no big deal for the Braves, who broke the game open with a six-run inning. Jason Silveira led the inning off with a double to left and Dylan Diashyn eventually hit him in with a single to right, scoring the Braves’ first run. Kalei Caoili batted two more runners in before Greco blasted a homer to straight-away center field that brought in two runs of his own.

Greco retaliated defensively against the Padre offense in the second by striking out the side. Suffering from an elevated pitch-count, he would be replaced by Silveira in the third. Silveira would allow only two hits while striking out five in his two innings of work.

Two Braves runs were plated in the third by Ryan Limprecht with a sacrifice fly and Bobby Rivera with a single to left.

It was the fourth inning that ultimately sealed the victory for the Braves. Of the nine hitters to come to the plate, five of them would go on to score, which put the 10-run rule into effect. The runs were batted in by four different Brave hitters: Greco, Silveira, David Centero and Rivera, who had two.

After advancing to the second round with the 13-2 victory, S.C. Briarwood went on to beat Mountain View 5-1 on June 13. The Braves are one win away from the T.O.C. Major title.

S.C. Homestead v. S.C. Briarwood Minors Two of the Santa Clara minor league teams faced off in the second round of the T.O.C. on June 12 at Briarwood. However, only one could prevail and that team was the S.C. Briarwood Yankees over the S.C. Homestead Giants by a score of 10-0.

The game, only lasting five innings due to the run rule, featured spectacular pitching appearances by Briarwood’s Patrick DeCastro, Michael Moreno and Paul Majoulet. The staff as a whole would allow no runs on four hits and four strikeouts.

S.C. Homestead had a hard time keeping Briarwood off the bases. In the bottom of the second, the Yankees plated the first runs of the game when Jadice Vaughan came up with a big single that scored both Moreno and Brayden Rosa.

In the bottom of the inning, the Giants’ Ross Raineri led off the inning with a double to center, but his teammates were unable to hit him in.

The Yankees would add to their lead in each of the following innings. In the third, DeCastro’s and Moreno’s doubles to center added to Briarwood’s leads and in the fourth it was the singles by brothers Raymond and Justin Aldor that pushed the lead to 8-0.

It was Isaac Garcia‘s single to center field in the top of the fifth that brought in the team’s tenth run, which put the run rule into effect.

With a runner on third in the bottom of the inning, Briarwood needed one more out to end the game and secure the win. That happened when catcher Alec Grimaldo picked off to third and caught the runner off guard. The runner sprinted for home but third baseman Aaron Trigg quickly returned the ball to Grimaldo, who applied the tag for the last out of the game.

After a 12-2 win in the first round against Sunnyvale National on June 10 and the win against S.C. Homestead, the Yankees advanced to the third round on June 13 where they knocked out the 2014 T.O.C. champions, S.C. Westside, by a score of 2-1. The undefeated run in the tournament landed the Yankees a spot in the championship game.

S.C. Briarwood Wins Minor League T.O.C. The thrill of the classic, east-coast rivalry was alive Monday night at the Campbell Little League field, as the Santa Clara Briarwood Yankees took on the Campbell Red Sox in the final game of the Minor League Tournament of Champions. Just like most of the games between the two teams, it was the Yankees that walked away with the 11-1 victory and brought home to Santa Clara the T.O.C. Champions banner.

Not only did the Yankees rally defensively behind starting pitcher Patrick DeCastro, who allowed only four hits through his five innings of work, they also did so with their bats. Leading the Santa Clara offense were the first and second place hitters, Raymond and Justin Aldor. Each Aldor ended the game with a perfect 3-for-3 performance.

The visiting Yankees kicked off the game with three, consecutive triples: two from the Aldor duo and one from DeCastro. The score was 2-0 after the half-inning.

The Sox scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first after a walk, passed ball, and error brought the lead-off hitter around each of the bases.

Santa Clara immediately returned with a run of its own in the second inning. They would also go on to score five more in the third. Four singles, all in a row, by both Aldors, DeCastro and Julian Garcia brought in the first three runs while the last two were scored by a Michael Moreno triple to the left-center gap. The five-run limit was put into effect and the Red Sox defense would run off the field without retiring a single, Yankee hitter that inning.

The fourth was scoreless for both teams; but the Yankees, leading 8-1, tacked on a run in the fifth and another two runs in the sixth. The R.B.I. were attributed to Paul Majoulet and Jadice Vaughan.

DeCastro’s elevated pitch count stopped him from completing the game. However, Raymond Aldor took the mound in the bottom of the sixth and was able to finish what DeCastro had started. He struck out the final batter of the game and the celebration began.

The Briarwood Yankees ended their season with a 29-3 record. Manager Emmit Palacios says that attributing factors to their successful season were not only their strong pitching staff and the tough defense behind them, but also the undeniable chemistry between the players and coaches.

“We just took pride in our defense and had some pitchers that were lights-out,” said Palacios. “They played and they strived for each other.”

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – After winning the state championship in 2017, the Briarwood Lions’ boys tennis team is off and rolling toward a repeat with a 5-0 start to the season and now a national tournament championship under their belts.

After a strong performance at last year’s state tournament, Briarwood started the season off with several good wins, including a 9-0 win against Mountain Brook, a 9-0 win against Central-Tuscaloosa, a 9-0 win against Sipsey Valley, a 9-0 win against Hewitt-Trussville and a 9-0 win against Homewood as they have been perfect this season.

That success carried over into the DecoTurf High School Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee from March 16-17.

In a tournament that featured some of the best high school tennis teams from around the southeast, Briarwood was able to reel off three consecutive wins to take home the championship.

The Lions took down DuPont Manual from Louisville, Kentucky by a final score of 7-2 and South Lake from South Lake, Texas by a final of 5-3 to advance to the championship match against Catholic High School from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In the championship match, Briarwood faced off against one of the best high school tennis stars in the country, Nick Watson. Watson, who is headed to the University of South Carolina to play collegiately, ended up winning both his singles and doubles matches on court one to put his team ahead.

Despite Watson’s effort, however, Briarwood was able to fend off Catholic by a final score of 5-4 to claim the championship in a tightly contested match.

A large reason for that success was Parker Bradbary, who ended up winning the MVP of the B-division tournament that Briarwood competed in.

It was another impressive tournament victory for a team that also won the Weinacker Invitational at Birmingham Southern earlier in the season. While their overall record outside of tournament play is 5-0, the Lions are a total of 11-0 with tournament victories included.

Briarwood still has matches with Spain Park and Hoover left on the schedule, but the Lions are looking good to make sectionals and make a deep run at the state tournament held March 23-24.

The Lions’ girls team also competed in the tournament and went 2-1 to finish fifth in the C-division.

They lost 7-2 to DuPont Manual, but responded with two wins in the loser’s bracket by taking down Pensacola Catholic from Pensacola, Florida and Assumption High School from Louisville, both 5-4.

Briarwood’s girls are now 4-1 overall this season with a 9-0 win against Central-Tuscaloosa, a 7-2 loss to Vestavia Hills, a 9-0 win against Sipsey Valley, a 5-4 win against Hewitt-Trussville and a 9-0 win against Homewood.

The Lions also won the Shelby County tournament this season by picking up five of six individual singles wins and all three doubles championships.

The Santa Clara Briarwood Braves majors put on an offensive show during the championship game of the Tournament of Champions to prove their worthiness for the title of 2015 tournament champions. Their offensive efforts, along with solid performances by the pitching staff, were enough to achieve this feat and bring home the champions’ banner with a 10-3 victory over the Campbell Giants on June 17 at Sunnyvale Metro Little League field.

The Briarwood bats came alive through all six innings of the game, recording a total of 13 hits. The team was led by Jayden Greco who finished the day 4-for-4 with two bombs and five runs batted in.

Although the Campbell defense quickly recorded the first two outs in the top of the first, three consecutive singles by Greco, which scored George Bouldt, Lucas DoMoe and Jason Silveira kept the inning alive. Each would go on to score and the two-out rally put Briarwood four runs ahead after the half inning.

It did not take long for starting pitcher DoMoe to settle in on the bump. After sacrificing a walk to the Giants’ leadoff hitter in the bottom of the inning, he quickly retired the next three batters.

During his three innings on the mound, DoMoe would only allow three hits and two runs.

The Braves did damage in the top of the second, as well. This time, it was leadoff Bobby Rivera who got the rally going with a single up the middle. Then, after infield singles by Bouldt and Kalei Caoili brought home Rivera, Greco blasted his first homerun over the centerfield fence. The Braves added three runs to the scoreboard.

The third and fourth were scoreless for both teams and DoMoe was replaced by Caoili on the mound in the fourth.

Briarwood was able to squeeze one run across the plate in the fifth but Caoili in the bottom of the inning gave up a homer to the Giants’ cleanup hitter. However, he would get himself out of the jam via strikeout for the last out of the inning. The homerun would be the last run to cross the plate for Campbell.

Greco retaliated with a homer of his own in the sixth and DoMoe, who reached base by way of a walk, would score on an Ameryss Meza single to left.

The champions’ celebration began three outs later after a shutdown inning by Caoili ended the inning and the game.

The 10-3 victory for the Braves came just two days after their fellow minor league team clinched the tournament title. For the first time in history, both the minor and major league T.O.C. banners will reside with Santa Cara Briarwood.

The first time Christopher Vizzina met Dabo Swinney, they didn’t talk as a top quarterback recruit and a national championship-winning college football coach.

They talked like two Alabama guys crossing paths in South Carolina, with Vizzina, from Birmingham, listening in wonder as Swinney, from nearby Pelham, started name-dropping his favorite local restaurants from his formative years in the Yellowhammer State.

“He immediately had that edge,” Vizzina told The State. “It was so much easier to trust him and build a relationship because he was so easy to talk to. … He’s bringing up certain spots you’d only know if you lived there, and I’m thinking, ‘Man, no other coach would be saying that.’ ”

If Swinney’s hole-in-the-wall food recommendations were the opener, the backdrop of that initial conversation with Vizzina — Swinney’s office, chock full of regalia from two national championships and eight ACC titles — was the closer.

Vizzina felt the pull of the Tigers’ family atmosphere and national brand from the start, he said, and made good on that gut feeling with an April 2022 verbal commitment to Clemson. Now, with Wednesday’s early signing period upon him, the four-star recruit can’t wait to make it official.

“It’s the perfect place for me,” he said.

Vizzina, hailing from Birmingham’s Briarwood Christian School, arrives at Clemson next month as the No. 6 quarterback nationally and No. 39 overall recruit in the Class of 2023. He’s also one of the top players in the Tigers’ 25-man signing class, which ranks 10th in the country nationally per 247Sports.

But it wasn’t always that way.

Neither of Vizzina’s parents played college sports. A longtime wide receiver, he didn’t start playing quarterback on a full-time basis until ninth grade. As his friends in the football-rich state of Alabama rubbed elbows with Power Five coaches and picked up offers as freshmen, he heard from UAB.

Even with some good film at Briarwood Christian and some good offers (Kentucky, Mississippi State, Duke), Vizzina entered the summer of 2021 as a lesser-known three-star recruit — a fair assessment, he says now, because “going into that, I hadn’t really put myself on display yet” as a rising junior.

A month later, he was essentially going throw for throw with five-star recruit Arch Manning at a Clemson football camp — and proving to coaches on site that while Manning might’ve been their top recruiting target at the time, he, too, could be their QB anchor in the 2023 class.

“I’d say I just balled out,” Vizzina said. “I showed them I could sling it. Watching someone on film is different from watching someone in person, and they watched every single rep. They watched me throw great. They watched me make some mistakes. But once they saw who I was, they were like, ‘Man, this might be our guy.’”

Quarterback dominoes fell from there, as they often do in the world of recruiting. Manning visited Clemson in November. Clemson got a commitment from five-star 2022 quarterback Cade Klubnik (now the team’s Orange Bowl starter) in February. Manning reportedly removed the Tigers from consideration a few days later.

All the while, even when he didn’t hold an offer, Clemson was “recruiting me really hard,” Vizzina said. The Tigers had been keeping informal tabs on him since his freshman year, and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter, since promoted to offensive coordinator, got involved when he was a sophomore.

Clemson formally extended Vizzina a scholarship offer in November 2021, a move that prompted another round of major offers and, at one point, elevated Vizzina to coveted five-star recruit status in the 247Sports Composite rankings that factor in various sites’ evaluations. (He reverted to a four-star recruit this month thanks to a minor statistical drop and and fierce competition from other similarly ranked QBs vying for a limited number of five-star spots in the class.)

On the heels of a strong junior season (2,665 total yards, 31 total touchdowns), Vizzina committed to Clemson in April and quickly became the unofficial spokesman of the Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class, which started slow but picked up the majority of its commitments and serious momentum this summer.

Clemson’s current 25-player class ranks second in the ACC behind Miami and tenth nationally with an average recruit ranking of 91.07 (out of 100). The class has one five-star recruit — Thompson (Ala.) defensive lineman Peter Woods, a good friend of Vizzina — and 18 four-star recruits.

Six players, Vizzina included, rank among 247Sports’ top 150.

“We don’t really care about the rankings, but overall, I just don’t feel like that’s right,” Vizzina said. “If you really watch the film and stuff like that, this is a top 5 class or the top class in the country. … You have high-character people playing high-level football. Everybody we have in this class is just perfect for Clemson.”

Vizzina averaged 203.1 passing yards per game as a senior at Briarwood Christian and threw 16 touchdowns against seven interceptions in nine games.

A 6-foot-4, 217-pound QB who prides himself on dual-threat ability as well as his deep ball, he also racked up 941 rushing yards and 26 rushing touchdowns in his last two seasons as a starter (20 games).

It’s a unique playing style, one Vizzina feels no other quarterback in the class of 2023 has, and he’s ready to refine it at Clemson starting in January as an early enrollee.

With Klubnik entrenched as Clemson’s starter for the foreseeable future, Vizzina’s current place on the spring ball depth chart seems clear: competing for No. 2 duties with Hunter Helms, Trent Pearman and, if applicable, any transfer portal quarterback Clemson decides to bring in.

But with a skillset that earned him national buzz at this summer’s Elite 11 camp and a sense of confidence that shines through clear as day, Vizzina isn’t shy about making his long-term goals clear — or following in the footsteps of former Clemson quarterback greats such as Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

“That just shows me you can do anything at Clemson,” Vizzina said. “You wanna be an NFL quarterback? You wanna be a national champion? You wanna be a doctor? You can do anything. … I know that I’m gonna be in the best position possible.”
